I went to Elliston Park in Calgary - there was a huge fireworks competition/cultural event there in August. I came home with 2 silver rings (one a thumb ring that I think was lost several years ago by the depth in the ground) and a digital photo memory card. I looked on the card, and it only held fireworks shots - no personal photos. I would try and find the owner with personal photos. There were a few other odds and ends found, and the usual trash that I keep picking up because I live near the park, and don't want to keep hearing the same trash.

Anyways. All in all - I consider it a good night.
One of these days I must figure out how to post photos on this site.

My boss phoned me at 10 pm and said he didn't need me the next day , as his son was going to drive the truck. I knew the next day was going to be nice and I haden't been water hunting at all this yr. . Hit the beach at 4am and hunted it till 6:30 . What a surprise , 2 1/2 hrs and about a dozen pennys. Hit the water and came up with a couple $'s in clad and 4 rings. Three of them were silver and one was a junker. One has a small stone in it ( probably a CZ ) , and one has a coloured stone and the other one has ribbed edges. So the hunt wasn't a loss after all.

Went for a drive in the country side on the way home and came across this jem on the prairie. Hunted it for awhile and had alot of great sounding targets , but they were all junk. It is great to drive the back roads and see what is out there and to come across some cool things. Here are the pic's of the rings and the jem on the prairie. " Sorry about the double pic , but it does it to me all the time. "

We have decided to start a new detecting magazine based for North American's with a Canadian twist.
We hope to have the first issue out for December 2010 or January 2011 at first it will be a bi-monthly magazine. We expect to go monthly within the first year.
Some areas of the magazine will include stories and pics from Park hunters, Relic hunters, Beach hunters etc. and also a best finds area for each issue! We also would like to cover stories on organized hunts.
Another area we will be looking at is treasure hunting from around the world, stories and pics from other countries!
We hope to have a web site for the magazine up and running by the end of Oct.
Name for the magazine hasn't been finalized as of this date.

Colin Jr. has a magazine out now called "Build Magazine" in B.C.
He's had it running for over a year now and is going great.
http://www.buildmagazine.ca
Colin Jr. is also a Master Pressman, magazines are right up his ally!

If you have any stories and pics that you would like to share just send an email for information to beachhunter1@gmail.com

From the land of the Bluenose....the young boy strolled down the beach with his second hand detector which suddenly gave a strong beep. The lad dropped the detector and began to dig in the sand with his hands uncovering a chest. Prying open the top he.......the dream faded as the middle aged man stretched in his bed feeling the dull ache in every joint. He made his way to the medicine cabinet and took his daily dose of blood pressure, stomach pills as well as two cod liver oil capsules and a Centrum 50 Plus vitamin pill.

The day was made for digging and the middle aged man packed his gear as he had done for the past 35 years looking forward to a day off.................as the little bouy inside him got excited as there was treasures to be found and dragons to be slain.

The middle aged man stops at a playing field behind a middle school and lovingly assembles his Garret and grabs his lesche tool heading along the edge of the field as the young boy dashes past kicking a goal that sends his team to the World Cup. Coins are dug with the man giving a satisfactory grunt not at finding a coin but in being able to once again stand upright as the arthritis gnaws at his bones causing a dull pain. Within an hour quota is had and the middle aged man is sweating and stooped over and calls it a day as the lad sighs as he wants to continue playing.

Once home the middle aged man counts his take........50 coins @ $5.99. After a brief rest and the sun beaming the middle aged man is refreshed enough to go at her again but this time aquatic.
Half way up the beach a strong sound enters his headphones and he steps gingerly on his scoop driving it down into the sand. He lifts the scoop which reveals a die cast car like the ones he used to play with on the beach in years gone by. "Man that is so cool" retorts the young boy.
A few more targets and reality sets in as he must go home and do the domestics. The young lad looks skyward and thinks that he has another hour to play before he must leave for supper.

Once home the middle aged man slowly does the dishes, makes the bed and peels the potatoes for supper. "Neat stuff," says the youth as he puts everything in his treasure chest. The chores are done and the middle aged man recalls that he did n't check his lotto tickets...................5/6 for the 3rd time...............the "If onlys" hit him as he thinks for all the good he could do for friends and family if that one last number was 26.

From the land of the Bluenose.......It was a day but not in May. This hunk of a lunk rolled out of his bunk. He was feeling great with no Bud (beer) in his veins. Think this bouy was short on something one would call brains. He went to the bathroom or was it the loo? Truly this bouy was missing something maybe a screw. A breakfast of green eggs and ham; would have rather gone to Tim's for some coffee and spam. So a voice said what will you do? I have something for you. Out came a list. A very long list of this and that called the "Hunny Dew List."

My eyes became misty for I thought my day was done. That I couldn't go a digging and have myself some fun. So I looked at the list. I looked at it twice. This is not so bad and might be just nice. Off to Dartmouth to a Pontiac dealer named McPee and Otto had a brand new key. Off to the jeweller for a paper regarding my loss when the security at Peurto Plata had given my luggage a toss. Off to Faders Recyclables to empty my trunk which was filled with beer bottles and truly stunk.

The Hunny dew list was completed with all the notations duly deleted. So it was off to the lakes. Lakes number one, two and three. Lake number one was deserted. No one was around so I started off digging the beach and the ground. Pull tabs, foil and beer caps did abound. All were found. With a pocket full of this junk and my Garrett in tow to the garbage can did this bouy go. Then into the water for a swish. Up to my ankle and then to my knee. Felt something shrivel. Lord I needed to pee. I swished to my left and then to my right. Looking for leeches. What a terrible sight. In my ears a sound did appear to the left of my rear. The sieve I did push in the sand that was below and out came my sieve with a wonderful glow. Praise Saint Digalot for what I had found. A gold ring that wasn't perfectly round. A green stone embraced the band worth in South Africa a few Krugerrand.

Otto was pointed to the south to the next swishing spot. The day was long and it was getting hot. On the way I saw a rock with a face. It looked mean. I pulled out my mace. It was with great haste that I left this place.

The dirt road to lake number two was a pleasant affair with my window open blowing my three strands of hair. Beach was infested with with rug rats galore. I stayed in my car afraid to open the door. They ran. They frolicked and were generally a pain. Thank God I only have one for I would truly go insane. A motherly lady came forward and asked what I do to which I retorted with nothing like you. For in the conversation I had found most of the rug rats that were running around...................belonged to her.

A few coins later and a dinkie to boot I packed up Otto and away I did scoot. Down the dirt road and over a hill. Got stuck in some road work. It wasn't a thrill. Down to a school yard then walked out back and onto the track. I turned on my Garrett without any delay with coins popping every step of the way. Out popped a penny a nickel and dime then it was pennies for the rest of the time. I soon tired of this type of game. Started swiping at horse flies which was sort of lame. Got bit again and again and then I retreated knowing now they would never be defeated. Off to the next lake, that's lake number three.

I was at lake number three hoping I would drown and be saved by these lovelies hanging around. Oh to be 40 or even thirty once more. Instead of late 50's and bones aching galore. Into the water which was now so warm, into the water where rug rats don't swarm a swinging my Garrett so gracefully and in totally great form. In total bliss did I search and search feeling no pain but left in the lurch. For now was the time to pick up the boss. Pick her up quick which would be trick. Twenty minutes till she was off and I was 40 minutes away.
The wood part was a failure , the sight seeing was great and the hunting spots were nil. BUT I did come across a great neet find. The place was called the Little English Village. Absoultly nothing there. Not even the prospects of a future hunt. The find was a grave yard and a Carin . There is only one grave in this grave yard. If I haden't read something about it I would never have found it. It is something different and just something I thought I would share. HH all.
I was fearful at the instant of what Mrs. Navy Davy would do to me homie......2 days house arrest doing laundry or worse...two days in the galley. Bouy is a real terror there. So wez a going down the valley to pick up the other gang member ..the notorious Slick Pick Rick... a man of few words and even fewer gold rings!

From the land of the Bluenose.......this was going to be one of those days as I had agreed to take two newbies out and teach them the ropes. The students arrived promptly at 0930hrs and I took them to Lesly Thomas School for their first outing. Cindy was swinging her Ace 250 while Holly my fav Freedom 3 Plus.

Covered the basics;
factory settings verses personal settings 101
hole and plug digging 101
pitfalls of improper swing and shaft length 101
digging ethics 101

An hour later the girls had each dug a few coins under my guidance although I felt a tad uncomfortable saying such things as;
"Drive it in right to the hilt (knife or lesche tool that is)
"Nice looking hole!"
"Put your hand in the hole and feel around the sides." Lost signal whereas the coin was sideways on the side of the hole.
And the worse one, "I'll come over and help you with your hole."
Lord love a duck. Girls took it in stride.

Holly asked me if someone could help identify one of her finds which is about 2 inches long as shown here in one piece.
Putting on deodorant in my armpits which immediately began to burn like the Towering Inferno then I looked at what I was using.....you got her me bouy Rub A535. Lord love a duck. Washed again but the burning persisted and the worse was yet to come. Put a knee brace on the right knee and headed off to the ballgame. Started as the pitcher and in the first two innings all seemed well with no ball hit back through the mound. Came up to bat in the third with the bases loaded and no outs. Hit a rope to left center and two runs scored....I was thrown out at first...actually made it about a third of the way up the line and the knee buckled. Man that hurt so I packed up and left. "We shall stop at Tim's." Who was I to question this so at Tim's we did stop.

Once at the beach no voice said..."And you shall swing the coil of Garrett." The halibut with that voice in my head I went a swinging as Marie plugged her Ipod into her cerebral cortex.
Time was going way too fast and we left for the dew at the "Olga's" as it was bro Rick's 50th b'day! Sad part of all this was that Pa will have to put up with the both of us now being members of his 50 plus club which he is the pres of. Suck it up dad.

I went for a hunt today on one of the colonization roads in my area built in the 1860s. As one of the first roads in the area, this would have seen considerable traffic in the land grant days before steamship travel became popular in the late 1870s. I was hoping for some old coins, but settled for a couple of cool relics. The best finds today were a Seth Thomas pocket watch (manufactured 1884-1915) and a .57 snider cartridge case.
